Already a challenging profession, oncology nurses serve on the front line in the war on cancer, caring for its victims, researching cures and educating the public. One of the most important forums for all of these efforts is the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). If you plan to focus your training and experience on treating cancer patients, the ONS is one of your most valuable resources.
Founded in 1975, the Oncology Nursing Society has reached over 35,000 members in 231 chapters worldwide. The society provides its members with a variety of benefits, as well as numerous services for the profession as a whole. Some of the benefits for members include:
- Subscriptions to the Oncology Nursing Forum and the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing. These are two of the "most recognized journals in cancer nursing," according to the ONS. Both publications are available to members online.
- Members also receive a subscription to ONS Connect, a monthly news magazine filled with career tips and health information for both you and your patients.
- Through CNE Central and other means, the ONS is a huge resource for "clinical practice information" to help you in your patient care role and to earn continuing education credits.
- A number of certifications are granted by the ONS, and members have access to test handbooks, and their exams are discounted from the ordinary cost.
- Discounts are also provided to members to save cost for "registrations, continuing education, publications and resources."
- Members are able to stay in touch with one another and share ideas through several networking resources and opportunities.
- A career center helps oncology nurses find jobs and better prepare for interviews.
- A "Hot Topic" chat resource provides members with a forum for submitting questions to experts for answers and advice.

- ONS:Edge is a marketing communications company that offers resources to help oncology nurses handle a wide range of cancer-related issues and challenges, helping them to provide better treatment to their patients. ONES:Edge also offers various services to vendors, such as durable medical equipment and pharmaceutical companies.
- In partnership with the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the ONS sets national "Chemotherapy Administration Safety Standards."
- The ONS Foundation raises money and provides financial assistance for a number of individuals and organizations.
- A Legislative Action Center lobbies on behalf of the organization, oncology nurses and patients.
- Every spring, the ONS Congress (May 1-4 in 2014) holds "four exhilarating days of knowledge, networking, and a chance to celebrate the oncology nursing profession."
- Through its Putting Evidence into Practice (PEP) program, ONS members can access and contribute to "evidence-based interventions for patient care and teaching."
- The ONS maintains a "research agenda" to guide the organization in its direct role and support of oncology research efforts.
