What Type of Career Can You Have Working in the Skilled Trades?

Skilled TradesJanuary 28, 2019

What comes to mind when you think of people who work in the skilled trades? Perhaps you think of a construction worker, a welder, or maybe you picture an older man with a blue shirt and a hard hat.

The truth is there is not one type of skilled worker in the trades professions. People who possess a special skill, whether it is in welding, HVAC, plumbing, or the electrical trades, can work for a variety of companies. Fortis offers several programs in skilled trades from which students can choose. Available programs will vary by campus location.

If you are looking to pursue a career in skilled trades, here is a list of four career opportunities to consider:

Welder

Have you ever thought about how skyscrapers were put together? Welders have a hand in that! They work with equipment and machines that create intense heat, they study blueprints or project specifications and calculate the dimensions of the parts to be welded, and they create masterpieces of steel and metal.

Electrician

If you have ever had your power go out during a storm, you know the impact electricians have. They install and maintain the electrical and power systems for our homes, businesses, and factories. Electricians who specialize in construction primarily install wiring systems, while those who specialize in maintenance fix and upgrade equipment.

Machinist

If you like working with your hands, you may look into becoming a machinist. These professionals work closely with heavy machinery to create or modify parts made from metal, plastic, or wood. Typically, machinists work in machine shops, factories, and tool rooms.

HVAC & Refrigeration Technician

Behind every heater, air conditioner, and refrigerator is a highly skilled and qualified HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) technician. They  ensure appliances are properly installed, maintained, and repaired. While the term HVAC is all encompassing, many technicians find success specializing in one field or one type of equipment (e.g., water-based heating systems, solar technology, or commercial refrigeration).
